After the Ghana Education Service has launched a new programme on teaching and learning using the local languages in basic schools from class one to class three referred to as the lower primary. In an interview with the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Charles Parker Allotey, he said, the policy which was implemented since 2006 have already trained about one thousand, nine hundred and two (1,902) teachers and are yet to train about eighty thousand (80,000) teachers, head teachers and supervisors in eleven (11) local languages. The researcher visited some schools in the Greater Accra Region to sample pupils views on the policy.

On arrival pupils were very excited about the policy and they say its enable them understand the subjects very well when they are taught. "Research findings have shown that it is good to instruct pupils, especially in primary one through to primary three because its promotes understanding as well as facilitates learning.

The fact remains that some teachers find it difficult using because you can not have teachers with their indigenous local tongue having to learn other local languages as medium of instruction within this shortest possible time. In some schools however, the reporter noticed that pupils in the lower primary were taught for instance with Ewe language whiles the upper primary pupils are taught in Ga. The question is ,will this not create irregularities? Watch out for reactions from the relevant authorities in the next edition.
