Our Mobile Reporting Training

Learning by Doing

The training programme combines several face to face workshops with practical assignments for an optimum learning experience. During the initial workshop trainees are introduced to the basics of mobile reporting. When they are familiar with the mobile phone, trainees go back to their communities and practice their newly acquired skills by making short video reports about diverse topics in their communities. They publish each report on the training website and receive individual feedback by email or Skype from our professional coaches. To complete the training programme trainees are expected to upload 50 video reports, which takes an average of 6 months. Workshops and coaching are conducted by African media professionals.

Trainee Profile

Our trainees are young Africans (aged 20 to 30 years) who have the ambition to pursue a career in media. Participants have completed secondary education, are able to speak and write English, are computer literate and have a broad interest in the socio-economic situation of their home country. A diploma or degree in communication/media and work experience in media is an added advantage. We strive to balance the number of male and female participants. Trainees are expected to spend an average of 2 days per week on the training assignments.

Selection of trainees

Trainees are selected from African communities that are underrepresented in mainstream media. Selection of trainees is done locally by the regional coordinators in close collaboration with local partner organisations. Currently it is not possible to apply directly to Voices of Africa Media Foundation to join the training. If you are situated in one of our target countries (Kenya, Tanzania or Ghana) and are interested in our training possibilities, please check our website in the future to see whether there are training openings.

Training website

Voices of Africa Website.jpg

Voices of Africa Media Foundation hosts a rich training website that serves as a platform for learning and exchange. Trainees get their own publishing space where they can upload their mobile video reports and articles. In this virtual learning environment trainees can compare their output and learn from each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Our trainees report about their daily life and developments in their community. Watch the progress of current and alumni trainees and see what is happening at the community level in Africa.
